Hurricane Shelter 2: 9/10/2017

Someone replied on one of my posts that South Fort Myers High School is a great place to be in shelter. I have found her praise of the response team to be understated. With 4000 people here they are doing a great job. The principal keeps us focused on our safety and continually reminds us to keep our area clean and be kind to each other. Not easy when we are waiting for Irma. But it happens.

Grace. That’s what happens.

Nancy Jacobson Buchanan and I used the bulk of our blankets for our “mattress” on the linoleum on concrete floor. This worked fine on Friday night as it was warm. Saturday night, I fell asleep and woke up a couple of hours later. I was chilly. So much so that I knew that I would have difficulty going back to sleep. While tossing and turning, I heard a voice. “Excuse me. I notice that you are chilly. Would you mind if I gave you a blanket? This was hand made by my grandmother in Bangladesh. She would give them to people going out on the boats.” And she unfolded it, spread it across us and walked away.

The warmth was immediate. And I was touched beyond belief. A stranger (not a volunteer) saw our need and gave requiring nothing. What a gift.

Grace.

One of the great things about grace is that it is not bound, but turns up in strange places presented by unexpected people. Like a blanket given by a stranger in a shelter waiting for a hurricane and the wonderful response team.

Grace happens.
